Humor and other things

If you need a laugh then you need to read this:

And someting fun to try is Wink.com, which is a sort of meta-social networking search site. It’s free and you can make a profile of yourself that lets you link all of the various websites and forums you might be involved with into one place. I went ahead and made a profile for myself which you can find here:

OpenID is now working

So with some help from my friend Rob and some clarification on exactly which OpenID plugin to use on Wordpress I now have support for OpenID turned on for all the posts on my main blog that feeds my Vox and Livejournal accounts.

So what is OpenID and what does this mean for you, the intrepid reader? OpenID is a decentralized system to verify one’s online identity. What this means is, if you have a Livejournal account you can use that account to login to my main blog site to submit comments now, so try it and tell me if it works.

Query for people who know me

How many of you think I am:

a) Surrounded by a sea of single women I cavort with all the time

b) Am dating someone

c) Getting some kind of female action

d) None of the above

Just curious here. Lately I’ve talked to a few people and found out that some thought I fell into one of the above categories.

Reports of my death only moderately exaggerated

So the server is now at Sheer’s place after a successfull physical move. Of course, discovering that console doesnt come up on my box was slightly annoying. Not as surprising however as finding out that cron wasnt working on the box anymore. Lord only knows how long that has been going on for. Not sure if I will fix it before I upgrade the hardware to an OpenBSD running Mac Mini system or not. As it is I have time since I am going to wait till OpenBSD 4.1 at the very least to come out before looking at new server hardware. Not to mention whatever I do the server will also need an external Firewire harddrive for extra storage since the Mini is limited to its 2.5″ laptop size HDD.

Email, webs, and photos all seem to be working and accessable as well so no big complaints there. Thanks for the help last night Sheer!

It was also fun to finally get to meet Kayti for the first time as well as see Sheer for the first time in years literally. It’s funny how we’re able to talk like it was just yesterday that we were both working at Www.com/Onair.com. Actually, its pretty cool and its nice to know there are more of “us” from the chunker days back in good ole SoCal.

Now I just need to figure out how in the sam hell to get the WpOpenID Wordpress plugin to co-operate with my K2 theme. With that dragon slain then the next victim/target will be getting the WPG2 Gallery2 Wordpress plugin working with K2 theme sidebar code. That shouldn’t be too hard I suspect.

On the difficulty of getting involved on campus

So in a previous post I mentioned in the comments that meeting new people is sort of diffcult for me these days, and has been for some time. Others would likely say “But Dan, your going to college for chrissakes! It should be easy to meet new people and make new friends and meet new women”

Well, perhaps if college were really like how Hollywood tends to portray it might be easier, maybe. Sadly, at UC Irvine reality is a harsh mistress if you are a white, non-religious, non-greek, geeky type person. Allow me to demonstrate with a copy of the on campus activities for campus clubs going on this week at UCI. It is truly enlightening.

CLUB EVENTS & MEETINGS

* Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Health Honor Society meeting: February 15, 6:30 p.m., Tamkin Hall.  Visit http://clubs.uci.edu/aed/.

I’m not pre-med, or honor anything. Trust me.

* Asian Baptist Student Koinonia presents Friday Night Bible Study: February 16, 7 p.m., HIB 110.  Visit http://www.absk.org/uci.

Hmmm, yeah, not Asian or Baptist and I have no idea what a Koinonia is. And seriously, Bible study on a Friday night? I’d like to get laid within THIS presidential term of office if at all possible! Snoozeville.

* Association for Computing Machinery presents Netbeans Desktop Application Development Demo: February 13, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., CS 432.  Visit http://blogs.sun.com/abhishek.

Ooooh…ahhh I could do an extra-cirriculuar activity related to my major. How about no?

* Association of University Meditators meeting: February 15, 6 p.m., SST 220A.  Visit http://clubs.uci.edu/aum.

Can’t say that meditation is all that exciting, lord knows I have had professors that could put me into a dream state just with the sound of their voices. Thankfully that isnt the case this quarter however.

* Ayn Rand Club meeting: February 13, 7 p.m., HH 257. The purpose of the Ayn Rand Club is to help students better understand objectivism as a means to living better lives.

I’d only go to this meeting on the off chance of seeing crazy ass LaRouche Youth Movement people protesting the Ayn Rand club members. That actually happened on campus last quarter, you don’t just make up shit like that trust me.

* Buddhist Association presents Meditation and Discussion: February 15, 6 p.m., HH 254. Meditation and discussion of Buddhist teachings with temple visits, guest speakers, and more.

Not a Buddist and what is it with yet even more meditation?

* Buddhists for World Peace presents Leading A Winning Life Through Human Revolution: February 14, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., SSL, 168. Open to all.

Uhm, Buddhists. Again. Seriously? What the fuck is going on here?

* Chinese Association presents Clubbing @ Avalon: February 15, 7 p.m., CCC.  Visit http://www.cauci.com.

I like clubbing, and I usually like going to Avalon. Alas I am not Chinese. Not even a little bit. So scratch that.

* Chinese Christian Fellowship meeting: February 15, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., HIB 110. Email paulgt1024@yahoo.com to receive emails. Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:30 to 2 p.m., Starbucks:  Visitation, bible study, & outreach.  Visit http://www.clubs.uci.edu/ccf.

* Circle K International meeting: February 14, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., SST 220B.  Visit http://www.ucicirclek.org.

I already do some volunteer work for the state. I don’t really have the time to add this to my plate.

* Criminology Law & Society Association presents Grad Student Panel: February 13, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., SST 220A. Hear about the experiences of applying and getting into graduate school. Snacks.

I’m not going to Grad School. Non-starter.

* Electronic Music Appreciation Association presents FL Studio 101: February 13, 6 p.m., ELH 110.  Visit http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/emaa.

Why do I feel like going to this would either be like living in a poorly remade version of Mike Myers Deiter sketch OR like going to a really shitty industrial club populated with people who critque music they know nothing about?

* Engineering Honor Society Tau Beta Pi presents Taulent Show: March 2, 7 p.m., SSLH 100. Cash prizes.
To participate, sign up at http://esc.eng.uci.edu/tbp/show.  Deadline is February 16.  Email: ucitbp@gmail.com. Visit http://esc.eng.uci.edu/tbp.

* Filipinos Unifying Student-Engineers In an Organized Network (FUSION) meeting: Interview Workshop: February 14, 7 p.m., CS 209.  Visit http://clubs.uci.edu/FUSION.

Not a Filipino, or an engineer.

* Hapa MIX (Multicultural Interracial Experience) presents Hapa Families: February 15, 7 p.m., HH 105.

I’m not multicultural in the way HAPA is looking for since I am white (german/hungarian).

* High Resolution meeting: February 14, 8:30 p.m., SSL 122. Open to all.  Refreshments.  Visit http://clubs.uci.edu/clubhighresolution.

This sounds like a group of god-damn dirty hippies. Nuff said.

* Latino Business Student Association presents Etiquette Dinner with Judy Davids-Wright: February 15, 6 p.m., University Club. . Business casual event. Presale tickets available. RSVP by February 11.  Visit http://www.lbsairvine.com.

* M.E.Ch.A  meeting: February 14, 5 to 6:30 p.m., CCC.  Visit http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/mecha/.

I don’t even know what the fuck this is talking about. Must be a racial thing?

* Pre-Law Society Valentine’s Day event: February 14, 5 p.m., HICF 100L. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Pre-Law Society. Enjoy free food and win prizes for couples or even those in hopes of having a date.

I’m not Pre-Law unless you count the period of time just before I get a ticket as such. Plus, its V-Day and I am single, what more horrible way to spend that day.

* Public Health Association meeting: February 14, 6 to 7 p.m., SST 220A.  Visit http://ucipublichealth.googlepages.com/.

Bust out the Sominex and wake me when the snoozefest is done.

* Socialist Organizer presents Revolutionary Study Group - What Happened in the USSR?: February 13, 7 to 8 p.m., HH 142. Refreshments.  Visit http://www.socialistorganizer.org.

I fail to see why a whole hour is needed to study what happened to the USSR when it’s obvious that Regan spent so much money he made the Russian economy try to do the same and subsequently collapsed to the point where the people demanded change and the forces of America’s capitalism combined with its cultural weapons of mass distraction worked its way into Russian society.

* Socialist Organizer presents Troops Home Now! Stop the War Planning meeting: February 15, 7 to 8 p.m., HH 108. Refreshments. Visit http://www.socialistorganizer.org.

Shouldn’t this guy be renaming his session to “Young Democrats” now? Oops, I guess I let the cat out of the bag there. Say hi to Obama for me.

* Society of Hispanic Professional Engineering meeting: February 14, 5 to 5:45 p.m., CS 219.   Visit http://www.shpe.org.

 Not Hispanic. Not an engineer.

* Society of Women Engineers presents Networking Night Ticket Sale: February 12, 9 a.m., Engineering Courtyard/ Copy Center.  5th Annual Networking Night:  February 28, 6 p.m.  Visit http://www.ucirvd.info/swe/.

Yeah, like they would let me go to this event. Seriuously.

* Students for Peace and Justice meeting: February 13, 6 to 7 p.m., SSL 119. Discussion of the war in Iraq.

I’ve given it considerable thought and I am sure I would just piss these people off if I went and opened my mouth or attempted to have a rational discussion with them.

* Swing Dancing Club meeting: February 12, 7 p.m., HICF 100A. Email swingclub@uci.edu if interested. Visit http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/swingclub/.

This is the first thing I have seen listed that isnt specific to a: major, racial group, sex. That is sad, seriously.

* Tennis Club @ UCI practice: February 13, 7:30 p.m., ARC Tennis Courts. Tennis Club practices Tuesday and Thursday 7:30    to 10 p.m. Open to all.

Last time I played tennis I believe I achieved a new record for distance hit for a tennis ball. I am not exactly the most dexterous person when it comes to gross motor skills.

* Vietnamese American Coalition meeting: February 13, 6 to 7 p.m., HH 112.  Visit http://www.clubs.uci.edu/vac/.

For fucks sake, yet ANOTHER racial oriented group.

So, out of ALL of the campus clubs and events going on this week on campus the ONLY THING I can see myself even thinking about is the mother-frakking SWING CLUB?

THE SWING CLUB!?!?!?!?!

THE ^&%&@%&@(*&$ SWING CLUB!?!?!?!?!

What in the sam hell is going on here people? I mean, I realize I am a student commuter from more or less Long Beachdown to Irvine where campus is. But to have a campus of 26,000+ students and being what I consider a somewhat average person with regards to racial background and somewhat outside the average with regard to religious beliefs this is truly sad to have such little diversity.

Does this mean I think there needs to be a White club or whatever on campus? Not exactly so, because everyone will just immeadiately think I am some white power skinhead neo-nazi nutjob. But it is worth saying that it seems like, if you are of some kind of Asian descent, or Latin/Hispanic descent, or highly religious then you have it made for extracirricular activites.

But if your like me, just just see all this stuff going on and feel a lot like an outside trying to look in. Hell, last week I almost went to the Vietnamese American Student Union speed dating night just to see if there were any people there like myself but I had a prior dinner date so I had to skip checking it out.

So, if any of my friends have some useful advice I am listening.

I’ve been working on my new PC

So I figured I should show people the new desktop PC that I went ahead and built. Basically, I’d been using a 3 year old Shuttle SN41G2 with an Athlon XP 2500+ cpu, 1GB DDR 400 ram, ATI X1600 Pro 512MB AGP videocard along with a 120GB IDE drive and whatever Pioneer DVD burner was $40 in the last 6 months. This rig still runs well for lots of tasks but I knew I was going to be wanting a newer system that was dual processor and could run Vista well and eventually play DX10 games well. Plus, I wanted the system to be much quieter then my Shuttle which had developed an odd whining noise in one of the fans which was getting on my nerves some.

Enter the new hotness! Its bigger then the Shuttle, but still is small enough to fit under one arm okay. Here are the hardware specs for the beastie:

Silverstone SG-01 mATX SFF Case
Antec TruePower 2.0 420W PSU
ATI X1950 Pro 256MB PCI-E videocard
Intel DG965OT
mATX Viiv compliant motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
2GB DDR2-667 Kingston ram(important note below!!!)
320GB Seagate 7200.10 Barracuda SATA HD
D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+ 802.11g PCI card
Whatever the latest Pioneer DVD burner was

Front of the system
Front of new PC

Rear of the system (one 60mm fan missing)Back of new PC

Left side of the case. Note how there is zero clearance from the PCI-E power connector to the HD cage. I also  went ahead and  took the time to route the motherboard header cables underneath the board and taped them down with electrical tape. The ribbion IDE cable is going to be replaces with a rounded 10″ cable once it arrives for better airflow. I also moved the one 60mm fan that comes with the system into the top position to help with cooling the video card.Left side of PC

Right side shown here. It’s a little hard to tell from the photo, but the stock Intel cooler has a decent amount of clearance over it from the PSU fan intake. Also here you can see how I routed the motherboard header cables out and under the motherboard to the positions needed. In this photo I still had my original 2GB DDR2-800 Geil ram installed. I had all kinds of problems with this RAM. Namely, the RAM didnt operate at DDR2-800 speed at 1.8V like they claimed. Also, the RAM was using a 16-chip package which was not compatible with my motherboard. After trying to talk to Geil via email and not hearing back from them for three weeks I returned the RAM to Newegg for a refund and spent the same amount of money on DDR2-667 ram from Kingston that worked flawlessly on the first try. Moral of the story is always buy Kingston, Crucial, or Corsair for RAM and dont even bother looking at anyone else, especially Geil because their customer support is non-existant!
Right side of PC

Now the system is mostly complete but its got some later additions that will happen. Mainly its going to get either an NVIDIA 8800GTS 320MB card swaped in to replace the ATI card or I will wait to see how ATI’s R600 graphics chip launch later in March goes to see how the cards compare performance wise. When I do the DX10 card upgrade I will also be upgrading to a Corsair HX520 modular 520W PSU to help deal with the cable clutter in the case.

I’ve also got some new 60mm and 80mm SilenX fans on order to help with airflow and noise in the case along with a nice rheobus fan controller to mount in the unused 5.25″ bay in the case that should arrive later this week. Right now the CPU runs 41C at idle with the stock Intel cooler on the chip. The ICH hub chip however runs at 76C which I am a bit concerned about. Once the new fans arrive I will have 2 x 60mm fans and a 80mm fan for air circulation in the case with the loudest fan being 16dBa.

All in all the system has been working great and I have Vista Ultimate running on it and things seem to be working well. Anyways I will post more about the system after I get the rest of the fans and the fanbus installed. I may consider swapping out the stock Intel CPU cooler still for a Silverstone NT-06 cooler but I am not sure how I feel about that still.

Maintenance and changes here

So, as it turns out, my friend Nick who graciously lets me host my frankenstein parts OpenBSD server is in a bit of a power crunch at the moment in their facilities.

What does this mean for your intrepid writer here? Well, it means I have to move the physical server that runs Nonmundane.org. Not that any of you ever care really but it does serve all of my email, my photo galleries, and my main blog which is then crossfed into LiveJournal and Vox for me by Wordpress.

Speaking of which, earlier this week I went ahead and did a small shedload of server maintenance and upgrades. The blog is now running WordPress 2.1 and using the latest version of the K2 theme along with all of the other 14 or so WP plugins I use updateded to their latest versions. Additionally, I’ve upgraded Gallery to version 2.2 RC1 and it seems to be quite happy now.

Next thing to upgrade will probably be the OS on the server at some point. It’s running OpenBSD 3.8 right now, but I am eyeing version 4.0 and keeping and eye on -current. Perhaps when 4.1 is release I will spend the time to upgrade to that. The other big upgrade I have planned for the server is a few months down the road. I think I will ditch the Athon XP 1800+ hardware for a used Core 2 Duo Mac Mini at some point. According to this post on the OpenBSD mailing list it looks like a Mac Mini can run OpenBSD-current without too much trouble.

In any case, I have my good old friend Sheer to thank for the soon-to-be new home for the NM server. The server is going to get moved on Thursday so my primary email, photos, and main blog will be down for most of Thursday since I have to pickup the server in Long Beach, then go to class at UCI in the afternoon and then hit up Rancho Santa Margarita in the evening to setup the server in its new home.

This means if you need to email me for the next few days, try me at my Gmail account at timelord@gmail.com. Otherwise, just IM me.

I will laugh however if I get calls/emails/IMs about “the server is down” since I consider the forums on NM dead and deceased.
