So in a previous post I mentioned in the comments that meeting new people is sort of diffcult for me these days, and has been for some time. Others would likely say “But Dan, your going to college for chrissakes! It should be easy to meet new people and make new friends and meet new women”
Well, perhaps if college were really like how Hollywood tends to portray it might be easier, maybe. Sadly, at UC Irvine reality is a harsh mistress if you are a white, non-religious, non-greek, geeky type person. Allow me to demonstrate with a copy of the on campus activities for campus clubs going on this week at UCI. It is truly enlightening.

Can’t say that meditation is all that exciting, lord knows I have had professors that could put me into a dream state just with the sound of their voices. Thankfully that isnt the case this quarter however.
* Ayn Rand Club meeting: February 13, 7 p.m., HH 257. The purpose of the Ayn Rand Club is to help students better understand objectivism as a means to living better lives.
I’d only go to this meeting on the off chance of seeing crazy ass LaRouche Youth Movement people protesting the Ayn Rand club members. That actually happened on campus last quarter, you don’t just make up shit like that trust me.

* Electronic Music Appreciation Association presents FL Studio 101: February 13, 6 p.m., ELH 110. Visit http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/emaa.
Why do I feel like going to this would either be like living in a poorly remade version of Mike Myers Deiter sketch OR like going to a really shitty industrial club populated with people who critque music they know nothing about?
* Engineering Honor Society Tau Beta Pi presents Taulent Show: March 2, 7 p.m., SSLH 100. Cash prizes.
To participate, sign up at http://esc.eng.uci.edu/tbp/show. Deadline is February 16. Email: ucitbp@gmail.com. Visit http://esc.eng.uci.edu/tbp.

I’m not Pre-Law unless you count the period of time just before I get a ticket as such. Plus, its V-Day and I am single, what more horrible way to spend that day.
* Public Health Association meeting: February 14, 6 to 7 p.m., SST 220A. Visit http://ucipublichealth.googlepages.com/.

* Socialist Organizer presents Revolutionary Study Group - What Happened in the USSR?: February 13, 7 to 8 p.m., HH 142. Refreshments. Visit http://www.socialistorganizer.org.
I fail to see why a whole hour is needed to study what happened to the USSR when it’s obvious that Regan spent so much money he made the Russian economy try to do the same and subsequently collapsed to the point where the people demanded change and the forces of America’s capitalism combined with its cultural weapons of mass distraction worked its way into Russian society.
* Socialist Organizer presents Troops Home Now! Stop the War Planning meeting: February 15, 7 to 8 p.m., HH 108. Refreshments. Visit http://www.socialistorganizer.org.

* Students for Peace and Justice meeting: February 13, 6 to 7 p.m., SSL 119. Discussion of the war in Iraq.
I’ve given it considerable thought and I am sure I would just piss these people off if I went and opened my mouth or attempted to have a rational discussion with them.
* Swing Dancing Club meeting: February 12, 7 p.m., HICF 100A. Email swingclub@uci.edu if interested. Visit http://spirit.dos.uci.edu/swingclub/.
This is the first thing I have seen listed that isnt specific to a: major, racial group, sex. That is sad, seriously.
* Tennis Club @ UCI practice: February 13, 7:30 p.m., ARC Tennis Courts. Tennis Club practices Tuesday and Thursday 7:30 to 10 p.m. Open to all.
Last time I played tennis I believe I achieved a new record for distance hit for a tennis ball. I am not exactly the most dexterous person when it comes to gross motor skills.
* Vietnamese American Coalition meeting: February 13, 6 to 7 p.m., HH 112. Visit http://www.clubs.uci.edu/vac/.
For fucks sake, yet ANOTHER racial oriented group.
So, out of ALL of the campus clubs and events going on this week on campus the ONLY THING I can see myself even thinking about is the mother-frakking SWING CLUB?
THE SWING CLUB!?!?!?!?!
THE ^&%&@%&@(*&$ SWING CLUB!?!?!?!?!
What in the sam hell is going on here people? I mean, I realize I am a student commuter from more or less Long Beachdown to Irvine where campus is. But to have a campus of 26,000+ students and being what I consider a somewhat average person with regards to racial background and somewhat outside the average with regard to religious beliefs this is truly sad to have such little diversity.
Does this mean I think there needs to be a White club or whatever on campus? Not exactly so, because everyone will just immeadiately think I am some white power skinhead neo-nazi nutjob. But it is worth saying that it seems like, if you are of some kind of Asian descent, or Latin/Hispanic descent, or highly religious then you have it made for extracirricular activites.
But if your like me, just just see all this stuff going on and feel a lot like an outside trying to look in. Hell, last week I almost went to the Vietnamese American Student Union speed dating night just to see if there were any people there like myself but I had a prior dinner date so I had to skip checking it out.
So, if any of my friends have some useful advice I am listening.
