The cost of gasoline in the US and IPac

First we’ll start off with something that is useful for all of you and then follow it up with something that will only be useful if you all support it.

So what is something everyone here in SoCal can use? Information about gas prices but of course! There is an awesome site at GasBuddy.com that has some good tools for discovering what the price trends over time for gas as well as oil are as well as presenting a map of gas prices by state, county, zip code, city and more. Check it out and maybe you can help save yourself some money next time at the pump.

Next up is something that I feel has been long due in our country. Right now most of you probably see news stories about how the MPAA or the RIAA are trying to impose some new wonderful draconian DRM, or sue the world into not stealing music, or trying to make that HDTV you bought last year not show your HD content at HD resolution because its not protected by HDCP or some such garbage. Basically, the RIAA and MPAA and certain members of Congress like that asshole Orin Hatch or the Honorable Congressional Asshole of the Month, Lamar Smith (more on him later)are waging a war against your rights to the ability to have Fair Use rights on media you lawfully purchased. In the process of fighting this fight you have large well funded political action committes who are funneling dollars into various members of the House and Senate in order to get new stricter copyright laws and harsher punishments enacted. On our side we have the likes of the EFF and the CATo Institute, but these are non-profit organizations and as such cant funnel money directly to Congresscritters they want to support. Enter IPac to solve this long unanswered need! IPac is a political action committee that stands for:

“We believe that technological innovation and individual creativity are vital to the future of this country. We believe that a prosperous and democratic society depends on freedom for all individuals to pursue scientific invention and artistic expression. Unfortunately, new, more draconian copyright and patent laws threaten to stifle these freedoms and restrict public participation in science, art, and political discourse.”

I believe that supporting IPac is the best way that we as citizens can start to take the fight against our rights back to our elected Representatives and I highly suggest and urge all of you to check IPac out and to contribute to their cause if you feel strongly about these issues.

Be sure to check out IPac’s blog regularly. Currently its going over how Congressmen that were sent iPod’s as campaign contributions were sent back by some and attempting to understand how Senators like John Kerry or Conrad Burns would decline an iPod but gladly take thousands of dollars in donations from Hollywood cartels!

Lastly we have an article about how to hack the apperance of the Login window on Mac OS X. Shows how to customize it to your hearts content. I imagine that doing these hacks might go away after doing a point upgrade of OS X but I dont know from firsthand experience as of yet so YMMV.

Some gaming news from the past!

Some of you are old enough to remember this, to others this is going to be brand new. In either case all of you needs to go check out the remastered version of Another World! Another world came out in 1996 and all of its graphics were vector based, but painstakingly done and resulted in a game that was challenging, fun and engrossing all at the same time. I can still remember playing this on my Amiga 2000 and then later on the PC. This game is worth your time to download and check out!

Also in other gaming related news female students in UCI’s Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences got written up in the OC Register for a female oriented game they designed. Overall its not a bad article.

Apparently, fast food in Denmark is actually healthy for you! According to this AP news story

“The low Danish levels are the result of low-fat legislation introduced in 2004. Under the new law, no more than two percent of fats in foods sold to customers can be industrially-produced transfats. Food producers violating the law risk two years in prison.”

Hmm, now I wonder why that hasnt happened here in the US? You’d think with all the health nut craze and the coming “War against Obesity” that something of this like would be done? Oddly enough, Denmark is looking like a bad-boy in the EU for this law because not allowing fast food and other establishments to use trans-fatty acids represents a trade barrier. Sheesh!

Looks like BMW is coming out with a new improve iPod interface for their cars. The new adapter will display artist, album, and song titsle on the display according to the story. This comes along with improvements in how the iPod deal with playlists and playing random songs when integrated with the BMW’s.

He made how much money?!?…and other stories

So the cheif of Exxon, Lee Raymond retired recently and was awarded more then 400 million dollars in his final year of his contract, getting a total of 686 million dollars from 1993-2005. This works out to 144K and change each day he worked, or over a million dollars a DAY during his very last year at Exxon alone. What the sam hell is going on at Exxon? So much for all of that “we’re in all this together with you” bullshit. Plus, Lee Raymond looks like Fat Bastard!

Moving on to other cool things, I stumbled across this site which documents how to make a Mont Blanc pen refill work in a cheaper pen then a $250+ Mont Blanc pen. Overall looks pretty cool and I think I will go do this at some point this weekend.

Speaking of cool site there is also this site which documents all of the SR-71/A-12 plane losses over the past 40 years. Really interesting to read if you want an idea of how equipment failures can adversely affect planes. Also has links to a video of one of the SR-71 drone lanuch tests going wrong and the subsequent destruction of the plane.

Lastly we have an entry in Wikipedia about something known at the Voynich Manuscript. A text that is written in a language no one has ever seen or ever been able to decipher even one work of the text. I find it refreshing when I stumble across items like these because it gives me confidence in knowing that there are still things in this world wee do not know or understand.

Some cool technology stories

First up we have the story on Apple’s site about the UCI HiperWal, a display made up of 50 30-inch LCD displays for visualizing large datasets:

http://www.apple.com/science/profiles/hiperwall/

Next up we have an entry on the Freedom to Tinker blog about the mathematics behind how to crack/defeat the HDCP encryption scheme. The math is simplified enough that most people should be able to follow the examples. Pretty clever stuff, this gives me hopes for Fair Use rights getting retained one way or another with the HD formats:

Here a former programmer from JPL/Caltech talks about his experiences working at Microsoft and how things there get done. Gives some insights perhaps as to how their development management is responsible for product dealys like what we have been seeing with Vista.

Lastly I want to refer you all to an excellent 40 minute documentary on Google Video involving Richard Feynman about the joy of discovering new things. Anyone who is into science or furthering Man’s knowledge should take some time to watch Richard speak. Great stuff!

M colon I colon 3

So last night I went to a screening for Mission Impossible 3. This was about the only way I was going to see this film since I don’t want to materially contribute to the Church of Scientology or that no-talent assclown Tom Cruise. That and at screenings is one of the few times I get to write down my opinion on a sheet of paper about how much Tom Cruise must like it in the ass and have some decent assurance that the producers will read it. Alas however at last nights screening there was no survey to fill out so I guess they are testing out this cut of the movie.

In a nutshell, the movie was “ok” at best. The best scene in the movie is about 2/3rds of the way in and involves fulcrums. As for the plot, well, it felt a tab contrived and after reflection and talking to my friend Rob I realized it was very similar to the plot of the first awful MI movie with Cruise. All in all, I’d say wait till it hits Netflix to see it.

Need peoples opinions on photos!

So I have entered myself into the UCI Photolympics competition (details of the rules are here) which has these categories:

  • 1. Mobile Photos (taken from a cell phone)
  • 2. Self Portraits (they seem to be rather popular at the moment)
  • 3. UCI Life (Special Prize)
  • 4. Macro (Close-up photos)
  • 5. Abstract
  • 6. Best Use of Adobe Photoshop (Special Prize)
  • In addition, there are three more universal categories:

  • 7. Most Original
  • 8. Best Photo (Grand Prize - Will be chosen from the first seven categories)
  • 9. UCI Web Choice Award (Recognized after the event through internet voting)

So far I’ve taken a shedload of photos when I can on campus and here are some candidates I’ve got and I want to hear what you people think of these. If you want to look at a larger version of the photo just click on the image:

I’ve got till the 24th of this month to submit my photos for the various categories, so the sooner I hear back from everyone the better, thanks!

Apparently recently California has seen two chunks of ice just fall out of the size. Clear skies that is! And no, these werent “blue ice” incidents from planes since the ice was clear like normal ice. Apparently this is a phenonmenon that happens around the world and its got scientists puzzled. Can’t say I blame them for being so either!

Rorhsach test…or sometimes a train is just a train

Lo and behold one of the more curious aspects of scientific research I stumbled across last week was this entry about a study involving doing MRI scans of people having sex…inside the MRI machine. If you’ve ever been in an MRI machine before then you will find the description of how the managed to fit two people into an MRI machine as humorous. (Link is safe for work)

Wal-Mart controls PC/console game development?

There was a great article in The Escapist this month about how the purchasing power and retail shelf space in Wal-Mart helps to grant Wal-Mart a near de-facto control over certain aspects of game development. Namely, if Wal-Mart says its not interested in a certain game it seems to imply in the article that development of those titles will get canned or deprioritized in favor of titles the retailier does approve of. One positive aspect of this Wal-Mart power that is mentioned however is the move to the smaller game box packagin you see in stores these days. On the whole however I’m not so sure if this is good for the industry that one retailer can influence descisions so much.

How to not waste webserver bandwidth

I saw this interesting article over at Mike Davidson site about how ESPN.com switched from table based HTML layout to CSS and W3C layout standards to deliver a better user experience while also significantly reducing bandwidth consumption of their site. Probably the most telling statistic is that by switching over to the CSS design ESPN.com uses 61 TERAbytes per month less of bandwidth! Wow! Check it out here:

Birthday aftermath!

So first things first, pictures! My good friend Tim snapped a bunch of shots with his new Canon EOS-5D and has put all of the photos up on his photography site here:

http://workmantm.com/Dan_30th/

My favorite I think was this one:

A bunch of friends showed up and I had an awesome time, so thank you to everyone who showed up! Things went remarkably well and I got some rather goofy/funny gifts from various people that I am sure will live in infamy.

All in all I dont think I could have asked for a better birthday really. Sorry I’ve taken so long to sit down and write about this all but school and work this quarter are really crazy busy for me. I need to get a bit better with time management still, but I’ll eventually rise from the ashes of this trial by fire.

As far as the rest of this week goes I’ve got a quad-campus fraternity party going on in Long Beach I am going to check out on Friday night and the rest of the weekend is up in the air. I may go up to Ren Faire on Saturday daytime to see friends and harass them. Sunday might be a bad movies day with Trina and Co.

Other then that I’ve got some news stories and other items of interest I will be posting up later today and tomorrow for those of you looking for items to pass the time or make you think.

A reminder for you all! My birthday party is TODAY!

What: Dan’s 30th birthday party and the rest of the April birthday gang as well
Why: Because it’s time to try and be reborn through firey Carousel
When: This FRIDAY, April 14th starting at 7:30PM
Where: BJ’s Brewhouse at 16060 Beach Blvd. (about 1 block south of the 405 freeway)
Huntington Bch, CA 92647
Dont: Bring your drama!
Do: Come and have fun!
Questions: Call Dan’s cellphone, 562-331-1603

I plan on hanging out at the bar at BJ’s until enough people show up to grab ourselves a table. Since I have no earthly clue how many of you people are coming (by my estimates its anywhere from 8-25 people) seating will be a variation of muscial chairs I imagine. Hope to see you all there later today!

So I’m turning 30

April 12th of this month is when I turn 30. I have no plans for a party on that day because I’m going to the TechWorks job career night at UCI that evening. I cant do a party on Saturday or Sunday because I am going to be at either LayerOne or Chuck’s going away party on Saturday night.

So this means that if I am going to do something for my 30th birthday that it needs to happen on Friday night. I’d love to do something big since this is my 30th birthday, but at the same time I’ve grown tired of trying to organize my own birthday party, its depressing at this point. So what I’ve got so far, barring discovery that people have been planning something for me, is to go to BJ’s in Huntington Beach off of Beach Blvd around 7PM till they close. If you can see this, it means your invited. I am not managing who is coming because I don’t have the energy to try and manage everyones drama dependancy tables. So if you show up, try to be adults and have fun and save the stabbing of people until after the party. Thanks!
