Various bits of news and other interesting things

Well in interesting news, Jeff might be able to give up insulin shots if this research in Canada progresses nicely.

Apparently, the reason I have asthma is because I have over aggressive natural killer cells, according to this research being done by people at Harvard.

According to the folks over at the San Jose Mercury News, Microsoft is attempting to make a iPod/PSP/DS portable system competitor. They say that J Allard from the XBOX division is heading up the project. Not sure what I think of this, Microsoft does have some great people working for them but I wonder if the project will suffer from trying to be too many things to too many people at once. Mayhaps this will turn into a portable Xbox, who knows.

At this years Intel Developer Forum, Intel showed a self-contained water cooling unit for PCs that should cost around $50. From the looks of the design it would appear to be stupidly easy to install and should not leak due to its construction materials. The guys from Hardwaresecrets.com has an in-depth look at the device here.

Now in a matter that is of more personal interest to myself with some of the writing and reporting I do on the side we have this report from the SF Weekly. Apparently, David Pouge who write for the New York Times and a few other establishments accepted $2,700 worth in free services from the guys over at DriveSavers.com for a disk recovery that he then proceeded to write up favorably. Incidentally, I do recommend DriveSavers myself if you have a dead or damaged hard drive that has data on it you absolutely can’t loose. The problem of course is that in the computer/IT space very often companies will send up products to review and never ask for them back. Part of it is bad management, and part of it is because the PR firms for these companies change more often then some people change hairstyles in a year. Reviewing services is something that doesnt always come up often in our line of work, but when we do it usually is comped in some way I find and we try to say to others that “You might not get this level of service” because when we have problems we can go through different lines of communication to find out just what the hell is going on really. In any case, this is worth reading.

“Elevated homocysteine is linked to B-12 deficiency, so doctors should test homocysteine levels to see whether the patient needs vitamins.”

The statement above is protected under a patent issued by the USPTO and my repeating it above is breaking the law. That and other insights about just how broken and messed up our patent system is found in Michael Crichton’s  eassy in the New York Times found here.

Apparently the folks over at the Church of Scientology have their panties in a bind over the sesaon 9 South Park episode where Stan becomes the church’s newest prophet to lead them and the head of the church tells Stan to just start making shit up. If you havent seen the episode I highly recommend you find it online. Well apparently, making fun of Christianity, Judiasm, Islam was fine and dandy for Scientologist (yeah I didnt know that either until recently) Issac Hayes, who plays the voice of “Chef” on the show
. But as soon as the show turns its brand of humor on Scientology Hayes left the show in a huff about “respecting religion” or some such nonsense.

For those of you who might not have been around on the net long enough to remember the Web Pages That Suck website or phenomenon there is actually a case being made in favor of ugly websites that I think you will find interesting. The basics of the argument is that ugly websites performs a certain function or function well enough to overcome the asthetics.

Last but not least I have a few reminders for people!

The LayerOne 2006 security confrence is coming up on April 15-16 at the Pasadena Hilton hotel. You can pre-register for $60 until April 2nd, after which you will have to register at the con when you show up. I plan on going to this years to see what they got cooking.

http://layerone.info/

Also of interest to some of you is DEFCON 14! DEFCON 14 this year is at the Riviera Hotel on the Strip now! Entry into the con is $100 now, but hotel room rates are $92 a night which is better then what it was at the Alexis Park. However most important of all, there is finally enough goddamn parking! No more headhunting for parking spots. DEFCON 14 is August 4-6th this year.

http://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-14/dc-14-index.html

Most important of all however is WORLDCON 2006. WORLDCON is the largest science fiction/fantasy convention of its kind. Period. This years Worldcon is being held in our backyard here in southern California at the Anahiem Convention Center complex just next door to Disneyland. It will be from August 23 till the 27th. I plan on making it to Worldcon as this will be my first Worldcon ever! Get your Worldcon memberships ASAP! Prices go up as we get closer to the convention, right now a full membership is $175 until July 1st.

The Internet has hit a new low

So I just had someone try to attempt a Nigerian 419 scam on me today…on Yahoo Messenger.

That’s right, this idiot was trying to pull off a scam over INSTANT MESSENGER where the scammer has to pull off sounding like they are a lawyer or barrister or some kind of legal representative.

Of course, this is afucking brilliant strategy when you consider how many of us get contacted via our personal Im client accounts EVERY DAY by random lawyers. Below is the log of the conversation I had with the dumbest scammer alive:

mozarkchambersatlaw

DoctorWho

This is very simple. If you were a real barrister, attorney at law or legal representative you would send a registered letter via postal mail in addition to contacting me via regular channels like by phone. Even then I would require to see certified notarized paperwork before considering what you say to be real. Good day and goodbye, I have finals to worry about.
mozarkchambersatlaw
12:00 PM
ok
12:00 PM
will get back intouch with you
DoctorWho
12:03 PM
No, you wont be because your not a real barrister and there is no estate in my name be-quested to me by some long lost relative in Africa. Nor is there any real paperwork for you to show me because you are a scammer plain and simple. I suggest you dont contact me again or I will call my friends at the FBI and inform them that your IP address is the origin of a Nigeria 419 scam perpetrator. Now go annoy someone stupid.

My photography!

Weekend before last I ran across a deal at Sammy’s Camera that I couldnt pass up and I finally broke down and picked myself up a professional digital SLR! I got myself a new Nikon D50 which you can see here:

Nikon D50
(Image from Digital Photography Review)

Now having read the reviews of the D50’s 18-55mm kit lens I came to the conclusion that I wasnt going to be too thrilled with the performance of the camera with that lens on it. So I opted to just get the body new and then picked up the Tamron 18-200mm lens as seen here:

Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 Lens

Of course after reading some reviews about lenses and how lenses are tested I’ve come to realize there is a much better 18-200 lens that I should be looking to upgrade to! Crazy I realize, having just bought the lens and realizing there is something much better available already. Of course this lens is the Nikon Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 ED-IF AF-S VR DX.

Nikon 18-200mm VR lens

What does all of that gobbledygook at the end stand for? The DX means that the lenses optics are designed to work with the smaller senor size of many digital SLR cameras, this allows for savings in weight and size of the lens itself.  ED is Nikon-speak for high quality low dispersion optics. AF-S means it has silent autofocus motors, which is good to have. The best part of all however is that this is a VR lens, which means the lens optics are vibrationally dampened which means that if you shake the camera during a long exposure it can compensate for your camera movements. This is really awesome because the system can gain you up to 4 full F-stops of exposure to shoot with. Also the VR in this lens is a newer system that now has a mode for shooting from a moving vehicle! Of course the Nikkon lens goes for about $750 online which is nearly double what I paid for my Tamron.

Of course this doesnt mean that the lens I got is a bad one, just means I know what my upgrade path is now pretty much since the 18-200 lens will cover the majority of the ranges I’d need to shoot in. However there are some other lenses that I’m interested in potentially down the line like:

Sigma 30mm f/1.8
Nikon 12-24mm f/4

But those are a ways down the road and I need to learn the ins and outs of this new camera first. I still have my old Canon Powershot S45r but its going to probably fall into disuse for the most part as I am trying to use the new camera more to get the hang of it better. I may sell it at some point and roll the funds from it into a Fuji F30 for a better updated pocket P&S camera for when I cant lug the D50 somewhere.

However I do have one particular photo from the D50 that I took last week when it wasnt raining from one of the parking lots at UCI:

On the importance of good friends…

So I owe everyone a weekend update it would seem. Friday night was a bust basically and I ended up doing work throughout the evening so I was at least productive to some extent. Saturday was not bad with a surprise call from Mike that him and Tony were coming to CA from AZ to take care of some business with Mike’s condo. Fast forward to later that evening when I hook up with them and their friend Travis, who turns out to be a pretty cool guy and Sammy as well.

In any case, we all decide to go see Ultraviolet. Ugh. Even going into the movie admitting that we were just their to see Milla Jojovich’s ass in tight clothing and some kick ass fighting sequences we all left the movie feeling dirty and violated. The movie is just really horrible, dont see it until it hits DVD and then just rent it, dont bother buying it. There were just so many technical issues with the film not to mention the confused story and horrible dialouge its just amazing the project got green lighted let alone allowed to be released. After that fiasco we all felt dirty and needed a drink so we went over to the Sea Dogs house where a fun little party was going on where I ran into Benji and had fun chatting with folks into the wee hours of the morning.

Which brings us to Sunday….ahhh Sunday, Oscar’s day! I had been flip-flopping on if I would go up to Trina’s(gamingangel) Oscars party and eventually I made up my mind to go up there to see them and hang out since I always have fun with that group! Well things were going just awesome, drinks were flowing, food was good, company was awesome.

Then around one quarter of the way through the Oscars dickless here had to shut off the containment field and spent the most of the rest of the evening locked in their bathroom. I didnt come out until almost an hour after the Oscars were done I think and then I needed some water and basically laid down on their couch and fell asleep until about 6AM. Talk about embarassing! They handled it well however and seemed to take it all in good stride, but I still felt bad for putting them all through that. I must be getting older, I used to be able to handle my booze a lot better then that.
However, as a side note, black liqourice is NEVER a good flavor for a hard liquor.
Hope everyone else had a fun filled weekend, but hopefully not as uhm, colorful as mine was.

So it looks like Jupiter has formed a new red spot, which I like to call Little Big Red personally:

The new Intel Mac Mini with the Core Duo processors in them look to be powerful enough to playback full res 1080p H.264 encoded video without dropping any frames. Not bad for a system with so-so integrated onboard graphics!

Have you ever lost data due to a hard drive dying on you, or “accidentally” deleting a drives partition or other such fun means? Then you will want to check out the list of free data recovery tools assembled here:

http://riccardo.raneri.it/blog/eng/index.php/2006/03/02/free-tools-to-recover-lost-data/

Need to hammer a MySQL server to test it, or make sure that your disk subsystem isn’t lying to you about when it commits writes to disk? Need detailed Cacti reporting data on your MySQL server farm? Then check out the assorted scripts, tools, and Cacti templates here:

http://www.faemalia.net/mysqlUtils/

Need to increase the value of your FedEx Kinko’s ExpressPay smartcard? Well now you can! There is a known vulnerability to the enTrac cards because the “security bit” used to control access to change the stored value on the cards, along with the value stored itself are not encrypted. This makes it trivial to change the amount stored on the cards as can be seen here:

http://www.mal-aware.org/2006/02/28/fedex-kinkos-smart-cards-hacked/

You can also see this in action in this video here:

Last but not least, ever wanted to know how some photographers manage to make photos of thier models look so damn good? Sure, airbrushing comes to some peoples minds but this page below shows how its done in Photoshop. Pretty interesting and impressive if you ask me, check out the difference!

MPAA and RIAA are fools Part MCXMVIII

So we have two excellent examples today of foolishness on the RIAA and MPAA’s parts. First up is the MPAA and their attempts at closing the “Analog Hole” and the reaction of consumer electronics companies and even other content makers. The “analog hole” exists because many TVs, even hi-def sets, aren’t digital, so next-generation Blu-Ray and HD-DVD players need to be able to send out an analog signal. But it’s fairly easy to record that signal at quality as good as the hi-def original and better quality than today’s DVDs.
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117938855?categoryid=1009&cs=1

The MPAA seems to think that customer education on this will be undertaken be the likes of those in the retail sector. Obviously these guys have never asked for help in a large retail store before. However what is interesting is that the other content providers had reservations about the complexity of the measures needed to plug the “Analog Hole”. So there is some hope perhaps.
Now on the other side of the stupid shoe we have the RIAA trying to claim that Sirius satillite rado is an “interactive” service solely because Sirius has a radio consumers can buy that can record MP3’s from the Sirius broadcast.

http://news.morningstar.com/news/DJ/M03/
D01/200603011718DOWJONESDJONLINE001152.html?pgid=qtqnNews2

Of course the other problem for Sirius and XM is the fact that they have to negotiate their royalty rates. So how much of Sirus’ revenue does the RIAA want because they are “interactive” now supposedly? Try 30%. That’s right, not 3%, not 10%, no that would be ONE THIRD. All because a radio can record to MP3. God forbid a consumer time-shift their favorite radio shows.
