Weekend Update!

So this last weekend I went up to Los Angeles to hang out at my friend Trina’s (gamingangel on LiveJournal) Serenity party at their pad. However weather was a bit icky with some hard rain in places off and on. This I think combined with the general tendencies of people in southern california/internet people resulted in no one showing up for the party except for me. However this wasn’t a big problem as I had an awesome time chatting with Trina, her boyfriend Matt and their other roommate Steve. Somehow drinking lots of wine while watching competition ice skating invariably leads to discussions about pedophiles and the and freedom. In any case it was totally awesome and I had a blast and look forward to hanging out with all of them again soon! Maybe with some luck I can drag them down behind the Orange Curtain one of these days too.

Who will win the title of most longwinded?

So within the last week the Samuel Alito judge confirmation hearings began before Congress and thanks to the fine work of the writers at The Daily Show, John Stewart was able to bring to us the most hilarious and sad race of our time. Basically, in this video clip Stewart is mocking the 4 different Senators because of how long they rattle on and on before the microphone before getting to asking a real actual, honest to God question of Sam Alito. Apparently, the winner in this case talked for a good 9 minutes before actually getting to his question! I guess these guys use these confirmation hearings to stay in shape to do fillibusting?

Rachel Nichols - Hot, hot, hot!

So sadly this 5th season of Alias is going to be the last season according to Variety which is really unfortunate. You see one of the new cast members of the show is the amazingly hot and smart (she has two degrees!) Rachel Nichols. Rachel has been in a few other things but I think this is by far been her most visible role so far. Anyways the reason I bring this up is in episode 6 this season Rachel’s character has to dress up as a hooker basically to get access to some secret information and I don’t care if the girl is wearing a pushup bra or not but she looks damn fine in her getup, check this out!

How gracefully it flies, the piano…

Recently the Hitler…er the History Channel had an awesome episode of Modern Marvels aired about Siege Weapons and included an long segment about catapults and trebuchets! The even better part however was the part of the segment where the English gentleman who built the massive trebuchet uses it to fling a 450lb upright piano filled with gasoline and incendiary devices into the air only to explode into flames when crashing into the ground. Truly a thing of beauty to see!

The 2006 CES Bataan Death March

So here I am, in Las Vegas for the entire week working my ass off like a dog for events in and around the CES or Consumer Electronic Show. However, as much as it is rough it’s for a good cause namely making myself some cash!

Basically one of the companies I do consulting for does location based networking for companies. What this means is we get pulled in to bring in workable and reliable Internet connections for special events and help interface with the client and their customers to make sure everything works like it should. Basically managed IP network services for special events like press shows and the like.

During CES the two biggest shows are the Pepcom and Showstoppers events which are for press, media and analysts only. The press types come to these evening sneak peek shows to see what the hot companies at CES are without having to deal with all the people buzzing around on the show floor. Business cards get exchanges and products get given out even as swag or for writers to review and evaluate. Overall its a great way to network with new and old companies alike and the various rotating lineup of PR agencies these companies hire to represent them.

However these shows are massive, this year both shows had something like over 120 different companies with tables at each event with not much overlap between the companies. One show was at the Grand Ballroom of the Bellagio, the largest ballroom in Las vegas at something like 200 feet wide by 280 feet deep. The other show was at the new Wynn hotel in one of their big ballrooms as well. Quick sidenote, if you are in Vegas anytime soon, check out the Wynn its not noisy at all and very nicely laid out. Very classy place!

NOTE: These rooms are so big I couldn’t get all of them into the frame

Doing these shows means running lots of Cat 5 cable for ethernet hookups, which means lots of time on your knees. Then there is the wireless network that has to get setup. Remember that our clients pay significant sums of money to ensure a reliable network connection. Of course the big problem with making wireless reliable is when you have a room full of 120+ companies invariably you end up with a lot of wireless equipment chatting in the RF spectrum and if you aren’t quick about finding undocumented offenders and moving them to an assigned channel the performance of the Wi-Fi network will degrade quickly. This is where a new device from the guys over at MetaGeek came in handy, the Wi-Spy. Basically it’s a USB 2.0 dongle that cost $99 and provides you with a rough resolution RF spectrum scanner for Wi-Fi RF signal space, which is a boon when it comes to understanding your RF environment and wanting to move people to as clean a channel as possible.

Right now the Wi-Spy only works on Windows systems but they say support for Mac OS X is coming within the next 6 months. However, invariably at these massive events we run into a few people who have problems connecting to the wireless network and 9 out of 10 times its embedded device people whose RF front ends simply weren’t designed to handle a heavily polluted RF spectrum. After doing these events for the past 5 years I can honestly say, if a vendors piece of equipment functions in either of those two huge show events, they will work in any environment.

In any event, working these shows plus trying to cover events at CES as press is very tiring and leads to 16 hour plus long days or worse where you wake up at 8AM and don’t get to sleep until 2AM the next morning. Normally I could handle this okay, but I also have some amazingly crappy crud/cough/avian bird flu crap in my throat that is slowing me down. With luck I wont get worse with all the running around in Las Vegas here. Anyways, after I get back from this rat race I get dumped straight into the frying pan of my Winter quarter class schedule at UCI which has me on campus every day of the week this time around. Wish me luck!

Dave Letterman embarasses Bill O’Reilly

Just before CES is starting up here in Las Vegas I happened to catch David Letterman’s show on the 4th of January where he had Bill O’Reilly on as a guest. In any case, Bill and Dave are having this back and forth verbal tete-a-tete and finally I think Bill crosses the line with Letterman when he tries to buddy up to Letterman by mentioning he has kids the same age as Letterman’s. Shortly after this Letterman then tells Bill to his face, “I’m not smart enough to debate you verbally point for point here, but I think about 60% of what you say is crap”.

Priceless video, you got to see Bill’s expression after this shuts him up.

Who hates Christmas the most? John Stewart of course!

Recently on The Daily Show, John Stewart pointed out that Bill O’Reilly is claiming that “Secular Center” a.k.a Comedy Central is part of the war being waged against Christmas. Of course Stewart realizes how silly this sounds and then proceeds to do a whole mockery of O’Reilly culminating with Stewart making himself out to be Christmas public enemy number one. Truly Hilarious.

Vacation! What Vacation?

So I managed to survive my finals at UCI in case anyone was wondering or didn’t hear. I realize I haven’t written here in a few weeks and that is going to change shortly. Your going to see me posting a lot of bits here shortly to catch myself up to current day events here. Apologies for the oncoming tidal wave of words!

Of course, almost immediately after getting out of school for winter break I ended up landing some contract work. Actually, a whole lot of contract work, which is both great and lousy at the same time. Great because I can use the money, lousy because its during my winter break and I wanted to at least catch my breath a little bit. No rest for the weary I guess! So now in addition to doing school full-time it looks like I am now doing work on the side for both Port of Los Angeles as well as the Port of Long Beach, working to improve a school districts technology infrastructure, oh and working to help design a high speed (100+Mbps) microwave based data network for fire/police personnel and first responders that will cover all of San Diego and link up to Orange County and out to Yuma, AZ.

Did I mention this is all spooling up just before Christmas as well? And then after New Years its going to be off to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas for the whole week of the show, working it and trying to cover it from a press perspective as well. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Years if I didn’t see you at either NYE party I was at or at other social functions since I have been on really tight to no funds as of late. Also, if we haven’t talked or seen each other in a while, please feel free to call or IM me and say hi. I haven’t been out much because of money issues so thats why many haven’t seen me.
