Visual representation of my class schedule

Hey guys I know I posted a few days ago regarding what my class schedule was. In any case I figured it would make more sense if I showed you all a visual representation of it in iCal. People learn better through visual/spatial means I think so hopefully this helps everyone who want to know when I am available to work or have lunch, etc.

I survived the Damn Big Movie Premier for Serenity

Well where to start really. First off, the movie is amazing! Go see this movie, its easily one of the best movies I’ve seen this year so far tied with Cinderella Man. Getting to walk down the red carpet felt pretty cool, but I wished I had been able to bring someone along with me. Alas, when I signed up for the list for the event it was 2AM in the morning and I couldnt get a hold of anyone that I knew could commit. Luckily when I got to the theater I noticed some LASFSians, Tristan and his wife Kathy along with Pete and one other lady whose name escapes me right now. There were a ton of Browncoats that made it to the event, I estimate there was at least 200 or more of us. After the movie we all walked through the back lot of Universal Studios to the section they had marked off for the party, which was rather large I might add. Took great advantage of the free food and open bar (thank you Universal and Joss!). Then got to go inside the Globe Theater where the cast were eating and rubbing elbows. So allow me to go through the list of celebs I ran across or talked to:

Neil Patrick Harris (hey Doogie!)
Shoshanna Stern (the hot deaf lady from Weeds on Showtime)
Adam Baldwin (Nice guy, had a GoArmy pin on his suit)
Alan Tudyk
Summer Glau (damn, she was purty in her dress)
Nathan Fillion (was totally nice, real great guy)
Joss Whedon
Ron Glass
Mark Sheppard (Badger)
Morena Baccarin
Jewel Staite
Sean Maher

Plus there were some industry bigwigs from Universal and someone that looked like a young Michael Eisner but I couldnt remember the gentlemans name for the life of me. All in all it was a great movie and a great party and I wish the night didn’t have to end. I also met this really nice gal from Long Beach who is an Anthorpology grad student at CSULB that I chatted with for a while and gave my number. Mayhaps she’ll call back, who knows, it’s a funny world we live in sometimes.

I had forgotten just how bad Bush was at speeches

Saw this over on Dvorak’s blog, it looks like Comedy Central put together a spoof video segment on President Bush’s speechwriter. The spoof stars Andy Dick and its fucking hilarious. They also include a number of choice Bush speech memorable gaffs. You can check out the video here at http://www.xroadsfilms.com/batescomedycentral/ or you can download it from my server:

Also, my friend CHS found this awesome clip of Cartman from South Park telling “The Aristocrats”. If you haven’t seen the movie The Aristocats yet you should give yourself a treat and go see it now!

Google WiFi?

Well folks, it looks like Google is going to be rolling out a WiFi network, initally in the San Francisco area. It remains to be seen if Google pushes this nationwide but I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t try to do it. More importantly, Google has a Secure Access Client to be used with the WiFi. However the free VPN client is for Windows only at the moment. I wonder why Google just doesn’t embrace the use of WPA or even WPA2 for their WiFi networks as its certainly fairly secure. Of course, if one uses the Google Secure Access client their traffic undoubtedly will be subhjected to analysis by Google to some end. If this is nefarious or is just used to figure out how to better place ads remains to be seen but I am sure there is some method to this madness.

Quick glimpse of this mornings keynote at PDC 2005

Bill Gates put on a good keynote this morning along with Jim Alchin. This was probably the first PDC where Alchin got a warm applause for some of the things he was showing off. Microsoft is really pushing “rich” user experiences at the client side through the use of Windows Presentation Foundation (also available in a Lite format that is supposed to be cross platform and cross browser). Two decent photos I managed to get of Gates and Alchin follow:

Bill Gates during PDC 05 Day 1 Keynote

Jim Alchin during PDC 05 Day 1 keynote

Additionally, during the demos of WPF cross platform capabilities they showed an application demo using WPF that ran on a very slick Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone the i-Mate JASJAR. Alchin then asked the audience how would they like to have such a cool phone and then announced that MS had struck a deal to allow PDC attendees to purchase the phone for $149 while their supplies of the phone lasted. Bear in mind this phone sells for around $1149 online so this was an astounding deal!

Into the gauntlet

Well shortly I’ll be headed to the Metro Blue Line light rail down in Long Beach on my way up to PDC 2005 at the LA Convention Center to hear Bill Gates keynote address at the confrence. I expect to have at least one or two photos up here at some point during the keynote with some inital thoughts on his speech, bandwidth providing. This also assumes that the LA Dept of Water and Power doesn’t have another incident disrupting power throughout the city. All in all I suspect things will go according to plan.

This week is Microsoft Week folks

Today marks the beginning of Microsoft Week for me. I call it that because I am going to be busy for most of this week up in Los Angeles helping Jerry Pournelle cover the Microsoft Professional Developers Conference (a.k.a PDC) up at the South Hall of the LA Convention Center. Seeing as Jerry and I are tasked with writing up daily reports for the show for CMP (the people who own BYTE Magazine I expect to be busy most of the week. This is especially true while I try to sort out the mess going on with my transfer admission situation with UC Irvine.

In any event Tuesday will be the big day at PDC 2005 with Bill Gates giving the opening keynote along with Jim Allchin I believe. So far my preliminary session schedule I’m going to be attending and writing about will cover:

As you can see I’ve got some session conflicts to figure out, this is why more then one person is needed to try and cover such a large event. In any case you will see some photos and comments from me throughout the week as I am at the confrence checking things out. Hopefully Jerry and I can get some idea out of Microsoft where things with Windows Vista (Longhorn to those who havent heard about the new Vista name-scheme) are going to be headed. Especially now in light of the whole 7 different versions/SKUs of Vista that will be released. It looks to be a good show worth attending.

And yes, I will be using my PowerBook at the Microsoft event the whole week. I expect that to get me some chuckles.

John Stewart blasts heads of DHS and FEMA

John Stewart blasted the heads of DHS and FEMA on September 7ths broadcast of The Daily Show in his segment “Meet the F**kers” an aptly appointed title to any honest news segment talking about the horrible management at the top by these people. Stewart proceeds to give background on the two people and shows choice video segments from other news broadcasts illustrating how incompetent these people were on live TV showing just how unprepared and uninformed they were I think. Some more 2nd Amendment info

Found some links to various sources confirming the removal of lawfully owned firearms. Also confirmed that New Orleans is not under martial law so all of these confiscations are illegal and against citizens 2nd Amendment rights.

What Constitution?

So apparently as the NOPD and National Guard are forcing the last stragglers to evacuate from New Orleans they are disarming any citizens in the process! What in the sam hell happened to the 2nd Amendment? Is New Orleans no longer a part of the United States? How is this possible? How come the people at ABC News who talked about this in this clip from last nights broadcast doesn’t once mention that this is a violation of our 2nd Amendment rights? You can see the clip from last nights broadcast here:

I’m mad as hell and not going to take it anymore!

Ok people, here is the deal. The US government is/has been/and probably will continue to fuck up majorly in its handling of the New Orleans Hurricane Katrina disaster. It seems like every time I come online to get more news and updates I am hearing more and more first hand accounts of how FEMA or the National Guard has been preventing resuce teams from out of state helping.

Think about that last line for a few minutes. The whole world is watching America right now and we don’t have our shit together here people. This is BAD.

There has begun some great work by the Daily KOS people to build up a chronolgy of the Katrina relief efforts or prevention there of to try and get a clear pictures as to where and hopefully who is screwing things up. You can find their great chronolgy here:

http://www.dkosopedia.com/index.php/Hurricane_Katrina_Chronology

Based on this chronolgy and based on other accounts I’ve been reading I find this op-ed piece that ran in the New York Times to be spot on, and I happen to agree with John Dvorak when he says the following lower paragraphs of the New York Times op-ed piece here I am about to show should have been the opening ones:

Michael Brown, the blithering idiot in charge of FEMA - a job he trained for by running something called the International Arabian Horse Association - admitted he didn’t know until Thursday that there were 15,000 desperate, dehydrated, hungry, angry, dying victims of Katrina in the New Orleans Convention Center.

Was he sacked instantly? No, our tone-deaf president hailed him in Mobile, Ala., yesterday: “Brownie, you’re doing a heck of a job.”

It would be one thing if President Bush and his inner circle - Dick Cheney was vacationing in Wyoming; Condi Rice was shoe shopping at Ferragamo’s on Fifth Avenue and attended “Spamalot” before bloggers chased her back to Washington; and Andy Card was off in Maine - lacked empathy but could get the job done. But it is a chilling lack of empathy combined with a stunning lack of efficiency that could make this administration implode.

Additionally, that op-ed piece from the New York Times is also being read by Germans in their popular Der Spiegel publication. Furthermore, its not just Maureen Dowd of the New York Times calling for Brown to be fired, but the editors of the paper at the New Orleans Times-Picayune in an open letter to President Bush:

We heard you loud and clear Friday when you visited our devastated city and the Gulf Coast and said, “What is not working, we’re going to make it right.”

Please forgive us if we wait to see proof of your promise before believing you. But we have good reason for our skepticism.

Bienville built New Orleans where he built it for one main reason: It’s accessible. The city between the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain was easy to reach in 1718.

How much easier it is to access in 2005 now that there are interstates and bridges, airports and helipads, cruise ships, barges, buses and diesel-powered trucks.

Despite the city’s multiple points of entry, our nation’s bureaucrats spent days after last week’s hurricane wringing their hands, lamenting the fact that they could neither rescue the city’s stranded victims nor bring them food, water and medical supplies.

Meanwhile there were journalists, including some who work for The Times-Picayune, going in and out of the city via the Crescent City Connection. On Thursday morning, that crew saw a caravan of 13 Wal-Mart tractor trailers headed into town to bring food, water and supplies to a dying city.

Television reporters were doing live reports from downtown New Orleans streets. Harry Connick Jr. brought in some aid Thursday, and his efforts were the focus of a “Today” show story Friday morning.

Yet, the people trained to protect our nation, the people whose job it is to quickly bring in aid were absent. Those who should have been deploying troops were singing a sad song about how our city was impossible to reach.

We’re angry, Mr. President, and we’ll be angry long after our beloved city and surrounding parishes have been pumped dry. Our people deserved rescuing. Many who could have been were not. That’s to the government’s shame.

Mayor Ray Nagin did the right thing Sunday when he allowed those with no other alternative to seek shelter from the storm inside the Louisiana Superdome. We still don’t know what the death toll is, but one thing is certain: Had the Superdome not been opened, the city’s death toll would have been higher. The toll may even have been exponentially higher.

It was clear to us by late morning Monday that many people inside the Superdome would not be returning home. It should have been clear to our government, Mr. President. So why weren’t they evacuated out of the city immediately? We learned seven years ago, when Hurricane Georges threatened, that the Dome isn’t suitable as a long-term shelter. So what did state and national officials think would happen to tens of thousands of people trapped inside with no air conditioning, overflowing toilets and dwindling amounts of food, water and other essentials?

State Rep. Karen Carter was right Friday when she said the city didn’t have but two urgent needs: “Buses! And gas!” Every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency should be fired, Director Michael Brown especially.

In a nationally televised interview Thursday night, he said his agency hadn’t known until that day that thousands of storm victims were stranded at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. He gave another nationally televised interview the next morning and said, “We’ve provided food to the people at the Convention Center so that they’ve gotten at least one, if not two meals, every single day.”

Lies don’t get more bald-faced than that, Mr. President.

Yet, when you met with Mr. Brown Friday morning, you told him, “You’re doing a heck of a job.”

That’s unbelievable.

There were thousands of people at the Convention Center because the riverfront is high ground. The fact that so many people had reached there on foot is proof that rescue vehicles could have gotten there, too.

We, who are from New Orleans, are no less American than those who live on the Great Plains or along the Atlantic Seaboard. We’re no less important than those from the Pacific Northwest or Appalachia. Our people deserved to be rescued.

No expense should have been spared. No excuses should have been voiced. Especially not one as preposterous as the claim that New Orleans couldn’t be reached.

Mr. President, we sincerely hope you fulfill your promise to make our beloved communities work right once again.

When you do, we will be the first to applaud.

Frankly, these people are pissed and I can’t say that I blame them one bit! Another group of people incensed about the governments show of inacation has been some of the press corps like Anderson Cooper from CNN who was interviewed on this weeks Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO. Bill spent much of this weeks show talking about Katrina and the problems with the “speedy” response for aid. I’ve included a link to download the entire show this time as I feel the whole show is worth listening to if you have the time:

Kanye West says George Bush doesn’t like blacks…on national television

I just saw this over on the Juice News site:

In a selfish and unprofessional move, Kanye West used a Red Cross benefit to benefit his own
personal platform Friday night during the NBC Hurricane Katrina Relief program. West’s comments
were later cut from the program when aired on the West Coast airing.

NBC has issued a statement denouncing West’s comments.

The American Red Cross has also issued a statement.

Juicee News has found a video of Kanye West during his rant.

In a disgusting display, West strayed from his prepared script to offer an overflow of hatred from his mouth, taking the spotlight off of the matter at hand, turning the relief program into his own personal soapbox. Whether or not anyone agrees with Mr. West… it was clear that now was not the time to voice such harsh opinions

Just before being cut by NBC executives, West stated: “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”

West appeared on-screen with comedian Mike Myers, who was obviously shaken by West’s remarks. At one point Myers attempted to put an end to the tirade.

NBC beat him to the punch, cutting to a shot of actor Chris Tucker.

Other comments by West: “They’re saying black families are looting and white families are just looking for food…they’re giving the (Army) permission to shoot us…”

Previously best known for producing hit singles for Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, and Ludacris, Kanye himself worked on a solo album for a long period of time, having the release pushed back time and time again. Due to his appearance and overall style, West struggled to find a way to get his own voice on record. Multiple record companies put him aside due to the fact that West is from the suburbs of Chicago, not a former ’street hustler’ or even one that wears the orthodox hip-hop apparel. A car crash on October 23, 2002 left his jaw fractured in three places, with his mouth still wired shut and only weeks after having an encounter with death, Kanye West began recording “Through The Wire,” reliving his near-fatal accident. “Through The Wire”, which sampled Chaka Khan’s classic track “Through The Fire”, would eventually become his lead single from The College Dropout, which was released on Roc-a-Fella Records in February 2004.

Kanye West also has his own clothing line - “Pastel Clothing” , and his own record label - “GOOD Music” (an acronym for Getting Out Our Dreams), under which John Legend’s platinum selling debut album Get Lifted has been released, along with Common’s latest album - “Be”. Other artists on his label include GLC, Consequence, and Farnsworth Bentley.

On August 30th, 2005, Kanye West released his second album Late Registration. “Diamonds (From Sierra Leone)” (which contained samples from Shirley Bassey’s “Diamonds Are Forever”) and “Gold Digger”, were the first two singles from Late Registration. West announced that his 3rd and 4th albums will be titled “Graduation” and “A Good Ass Job”, respectively.

So here is the video in case you havent seen it yet:

Mike Meyers and Kanye West
Kanye West saying Bush doesn’t care about black people (3.8MB WMV)

While I have to say what Kanye West did here was uncalled for I also have to wonder just how much this is going to hurt the President’s already low approval rating. Some recent Gallup pool data shows some recovery in Bush’s approval rating but I can’t honest imagine this recent gain lasting for very long in light of the huge mess that New Orleans has become:

Polling Data

Do you approve or disapprove of how George W. Bush is handling his job as president?

                   Aug. 30  Aug. 25  Aug. 11  Aug. 7
    Approve      45%       40%        45%      45%
Disapprove      52%       56%        51%      51%

This is only going to get uglier in the next week I think. I can’t wait to see what Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson are going to start saying now after this event. The floodgates have been opened I suspect.

An example of things gone wrong in New Orleans

So I’m listening to the Peercast of the Louisiana radio chatter (see previous post for how to listen to it) between the National Guard, State Troopers and the states EOC (Emergency Operations Center) and over the radio comes a request to the EOC to check into a support group that is trying to restore power that is being shot at. Now, why on earth would you be trying to shoot at the people trying to restore the infrastructure of the city? What is wrong with these people? There is going to be some pretty serious hard questions people need to answer regarding this behavior. I can remember the LA riots but this just seems like New Orleans has turned into some kind of strange part of Escape from New York.

Hurricane Katrina Aftermath Information

Things out in New Orleans are an absolute mess. There is someone at datacenter (DirectNIC) in New Orleans that has been blogging about how things are going down there and it doesn’t sound good. You can find their blog here:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor

To give you an idea of how bad things are down there here is a recent entry from Interdictor’s blog.

Jesse Jackson
Dear Sir:

Respectfully, I submit that you should shut the hell up. Looting and lawlessness IS the problem. The National Guard choppers are BEING SHOT AT. The NOPD are BEING SHOT AT. You want to focus on the levee? So do they, but check this out: THEY CAN’T UNTIL THE MOB STOPS ATTACKING THE RESCUE OPERATION.

I know you’re looking at this situation with concern for the racial implications of the deterioration of civilization out here, but this is bigger than whether people are going to be racists after this is over. This is about rescuing the masses i.e. life and death.

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and blame your stupid comments on your lack of knowledge of the situation. Don’t prove me a fool for doing so.

Regards,

Michael Barnett

Additionally, you can listen in to a Louisiana radio scanner via Peercast (the other sites are full up on listeners) by downloading a free client at http://www.peercast.org. Once you have the client installed you can listen to the radio chatter with this link:

peercast://pls/007D48952E4E7D0992252C52EAE7C1CF?tip=192.153.154.157:7144

If that link doesnt work, copy it and paste it into a web browser and then hit enter. Listening to the radio chatter over there things are a mess.

Additionally this WIki site is a good source for intel and information for what is going on down there:

Below are some photos that have been taken by the guys at the DirectNIC datacenter to give you an idea of what things are like:
