The Dan Report for June 29, 2005

The Dan Report, brought to you by The Boob Council.

Remember women, only you have awesome breasts. Do your part to support your community by supporting your breasts properly! This message brought to you by The Boob Council. This is your brain, this is your brain looking at boobs. Any questions?

So yesterday I got myself a contract position at a computer security and data forensics company in Newport Beach for $50/hr! They are willing to work with my school schedule it looks like so we will see how this works out. I should be getting the contract paperwork in the next week to overlook.

Had class and lab yesterday, so far so good. Managed to finally grab a copy of Eclipse 3.1 for the PowerBook, now I just need to grab it for my PC as well. Met some of the people in my class also and am starting to network there too, some good things overall. Getting home from UCI at 5PM takes about an hour so next week I think I will give PCH a try and see if its any shorter. If not at least its prettier.

I’ve got a different lunch meeting today with someone who sounds like they want to use me as an assistant or researcher on the side or something to that effect so we will see in about an hour how that goes down. Overall its shaping up to be a good week finally.

Who want to go see War of the Worlds this week btw?

You are no Senator of mine Feinstein

June 24, 2005

Mr. Daniel Spisak
11112 Martha Ann Drive
Los Alamitos, California 90720

Dear Mr. Spisak:

Thank you for writing to me about the digital broadcast
flag. I appreciate hearing from you.

I feel strongly that we must prevent the theft of copyrighted
works, and that includes digital television (DTV) programming.
As we move forward in the digital age, it is increasingly easy for
unauthorized copies of copyrighted works to be made and illegally
distributed. Over-the-air digital content is the easiest to pirate.

As we contemplate the use of new technologies to protect
copyrighted works, we must pay careful attention to ensure that a
balance is struck between competitive protections and individual
consumer interests. It is important to allow for the continued fair
use of copyrighted material, even while we seek to stop
unauthorized reproductions from being illegally distributed outside
the home and over the Internet.

Again, thank you for writing. Please know that as the
Senate considers legislation of the broadcast flag, I will be sure to
keep your views in mind. If you should have any questions, please
feel free to contact my Washington, DC staff at (202) 224-3841.

Sincerely yours,

Dianne Feinstein
United States Senator

http://feinstein.senate.gov

Further information about my position on issues of concern to California and the Nation are available at my website
http://feinstein.senate.gov. You can also receive electronic e-mail updates by subscribing to my e-mail list at
http://feinstein.senate.gov/issue.html.

Dear Senator,

I appriciate you taking the time to write back, however I must respectfully disagree with your position on the digital broadcast flag. I am curious to try and understand how my useage of a digital video recorder device such as a TiVo or a Microsoft Media Center device to record over-the-air analog and digital broadcasts is considered “theft”. I use that word lightly as it implies I, as a citizen am being charged with a crime without any thought of due process or evidence to the fact. I have seen people in Hollywood and other parts of the entertainment industry go so far as to suggest that if I do not watch the commercials broadcast during their shows airtime that I am indeed “stealing” from them. I do not agree with that position in the strongest ways possible. Over time technology has allowed us as people to regain more freedom over our lives and to experience life to the fullest extent possible.

I agree that there need to be sensible protections for content however to insure that creators of content can continue to make a living doing what they do best. However, empowering the FCC with the ability to demand the inclusion of technology like the digital broadcast flag is going too far. As long as content is broadcast over public domain airwaves then the citizens of this country should be able and entitled to exercise their fair use rights as they have enjoyed for the past 20 years. This means that I should be able to record any show that is broadcast over the airwaves that I supposedly am part owner of alongside with the rest of the people in the US. This means I should be able to take that recording and then play it back on my computers at home, or on my portable electronics devices as I see fit.

With regards to “unauthorized reproductions from being illegally distributed outside
the home and over the Internet” I suggest you take a step back and think about what you are really saying here. Have you ever recorded a TV show and then a friend of yours has later said to you “Hey, I missed the show last week, can I borrow your tape?” and then you lend them that tape? If so then by your own logic here it would seem that you are a criminal. If indeed that is the case I emplore you to seriously think about any legislation you will be attempting to get made into law that will potentially criminalize the actions of millions of innocent citizens of this great country for the simple act of letting someone else watch what they have recorded because they missed a show.

Furthermore, if you wish to be truly serious about stopping unauthorized distribution of over-the-air content then I suggest you tell the people in Hollywood to stop outright lying to the public about the true costs of unauthorized distribution. Earlier this year Star Wars Episode 3: The Revenge of the Sith opened in theaters, about a day or so before the opening a work cut of the movie was available on the Internet through various means. Yet, Episode III broke all kinds of earnings records and still grossed well over half a billion dollars worldwide in the opening week. I have to listen to the likes of Jack Valenti tell me that movie piracy is hurting them at the box office and the next day I read stories about how box office recipts are higher then ever. I have seen this happen numerous times over the past few years and I dont see it stopping anytime soon. You want to help Hollywood protect their content then you need to help them crack down on professionals, people who copy and produce hundreds of thousands of copied DVDs. Criminalizing people making video recordings of movies in the theater is simply stupid because the real “pirates” will be part of the system and not have to worry about the laws you throw up to stop the common man from helping these thieves.

Thank you for your time in these matters.

Sincerely,

Daniel E. Spisak

Frustrated!!!

Hmmm I’ve got 550 in the bank right now.

Car payment will kick off on July 1st, and I wont be able to cover it unless one of my small contracts pays me soon.

Auto insurance will be due on July 7th, for 600 for 6 months. I might be able to get that lower if I can switch back to USAA finally. Will have to look into this when I have the time. I think the three points finally dropped off my license.

I can’t apply for unemployment because I am working a contract job right now and they’d just deduct my hourly wage from my unemployment check and it would zero it out quickly. Sigh.

I still owe Discover card like 3800, gah, I want to pay them off so bad right now. They are calling 5 times a day and I just let it go to voicemail because I have nothing to give them.

I owe USAA like 1250 or so, but they are far nicer about dealing with me and I try to return the favor as best as I can when I have the money.

Of course this doesnt cover the money I am going to be paying my parents back, as well as the money I still owe Mike and Tim. God, I hate owing friends money right now. They have been totally awesome about it but I hate having to let it drag on for so long.

I have a lunch meeting with the guys from PivX in Irvine on Wednesday. I have NO idea what they want to talk to me about because when I talked to the guy Wednesday he basically said “I havent figured out yet what I want to talk to you about, I need to figure my plans out”. Which leaves me wondering why the guy asked to talk to me in the first place after reading my resume.

I’ve got to schedule a lunch meeting with Andrea Hoy next week sometime too, she sounds like she wants to use me as an assistant or something of that like. Probably cant pay awesome money but the experience and getting to work with someone like her in the industry would be a big help to my career I think come time I finish getting my degree.

I’ve made zero progress with regards to dating likely but thats mostly because I have to really conserve my money so I havent gone out much nor had the energy to go out much what with the work for the port contract I’ve been doing along with having to get all my paperwork in order for UC Irvine. (Ugh, more money I need to pay my parents back for)

My job hunt has basically stalled outside of the two lunch meetings I am going to next week since now I am a student looking for part time work that totally changes the dynamic of what I am looking for not to mention that very few places actually are looking for part-time anything unless we start talking about retail hell or the services industries.

I’ve also started Atkins and I’m going to ressurect one of the bikes out in the garage so I can start doing some bike rides around along the resivour like I used to do back when I was 18.

I’m going to be videotaping a massive fireworks show up in Ventura for the 4th of July. I might be doing this on the barge where they launch the fireworks from, not sure yet. Should be fun!

I just feel like I dont have anything that I can depend on right now outside of my friends and my parents. I know that in of itself is pretty awesome but dammit I dont want to have to be reliant on the good will of others I want to be self sufficent again.

A blog worth reading…

Yeah, yeah, I know what some of you are going to say. This isn’t quite what you think it is. It’s actually interesting and somewhat well written. Nice to see there are people out there who can take this stuff seriously.

Yeah, way to be “diverse” people! Jesus…

NOTE: I hate “political correctness” and “diversity” as it is commonly espoused by political and educator type figures because for the most part, its all a huge steaming load of bull.

Why Can’t They “Just Get Along”?
V-Day meets P-Day on campus.

By Christina Hoff Sommers

Warning:The following contains adult (in this case, collegiate) language, along with gratuitous references to male and female genitalia.

College administrators have been enthusiastic supporters Eve Ensler’s play The Vagina Monologues and schools across the nation celebrate “V-Day” (short for Vagina Day) every year. But when the College Republicans at Roger Williams University in Rhode Island rained on the celebrations of V-Day by inaugurating Penis Day and staging a satire called The Penis Monologues, the official reaction was horror. Two participating students, Monique Stuart and Andy Mainiero, have just received sharp letters of reprimand and have been placed on probation by the Office of Judicial Affairs. The costume of the P-Day “mascot” — a friendly looking “penis” named Testaclese, has been confiscated and is under lock and key in the office of the assistant dean of student affairs, John King.

The P-Day satirists are the first to admit that their initiative is tasteless and crude. But they rightly point out that V-Day is far more extreme. They are shocked that the administration has come down hard on their good-natured spoof, when all along it has been completely accommodating to the in-your-face vulgarity of the vagina activists.

V-Day has now replaced Valentine’s Day on more than 500 college campuses (including Catholic ones). The high point of the day is a performance of Ensler’s raunchy play, which consists of various women talking in graphic, and I mean graphic, terms about their intimate anatomy. The play is poisonously anti-male. Its only romantic scene, if you can call it that, takes place when a 24-year-old woman seduces a young girl (in the original version she was 13 years old, but in a more recent version is played as a 16-year-old.) The woman invites the girl into her car, takes her to her house, plies her with vodka, and seduces her. What might seem like a scene from a public-service kidnapping-prevention video shown to schoolchildren becomes, in Ensler’s play “a kind of heaven.”

The week before V-Day, the Roger Williams campus was plastered with flyers emblazoned with slogans such as “My Vagina is Flirty” and “My Vagina is Huggable.” There was a widely publicized “orgasm workshop.” On the day of the play, the V-warriors sold lollipops in the in the shape of–-guess what? Last year, the student union was flooded with questionnaires asking unsuspecting students questions like “What does your Vagina smell like?” None of this offended the administration or elicited any reprimands, probations, or confiscations.

The campus conservatives artfully (in the college sense of “artful”) mimicked the V-Day campaign. They papered the school with flyers that said, “My penis is majestic” and “My penis is hilarious.” The caption on one handout read, “My Penis is studious.” It showed Testaclese reclining on a couch reading Michael Barone’s Hard America, Soft America.

“Testaclese” tipped the scales when he approached the university Provost, Edward J. Kavanagh, outside the student union. Apparently taking him/it for a giant mushroom, Provost Kavanagh cheerfully greeted him. But when Testaclese presented him with an honorary award as a campus “Penis Warrior,” the stunned official realized that it was no mushroom. After this incident, which was recorded on videotape, the promoters of P-Day were ordered to cease circulating their flyers and to keep Testaclese off campus grounds. Mindful of how school officers had never once protested any of the antics of Vagina warriors, the P-warriors did not comply. The Testaclese costume was then confiscated and formal charges followed.

It is easy to understand why school officials would not want a six-foot phallus wandering around campus; nor why they would ask students not to paper the college with posters describing all the things it likes to do. But that is just the sort of thing the vagina warriors have been doing, year after year, on hundreds of campuses. In fact, P-Day at Roger Williams was mild by comparison. Wesleyan College hosted a “C***” workshop; Penn State held a “C***”-fest. At Arizona State, students displayed a 40-foot inflatable plastic vagina. It was not confiscated and no one was ever threatened with probation.

Unhappily, P-Day may be the only effective means of countering V-Day with all its c-fests, graphic lollipops, intrusive questionnaires, outsized effigies of vaginas and its thematic anti-male play. The prospect of public readings from P-Monologues on campuses around the country just might be the reductio ad absurdum that could drive the vagina warriors to the bargaining table. The student activists opposed to V-Day will gladly cancel P-Day the moment the V-warriors abandon their vagina–fests.

But for the short term, college administrators should brace themselves. The rebels at Roger Williams are talking about a Free Testaclese Fund. And word is spreading to other campuses. P-Day and Testaclese will be back next year. And not just in Rhode Island.

I went inland to Costa Mesa and had coffee….and no tsunami came by to sweep the three of us away. However it was windy, cold as hell, and misting…the air was salty too. But it was a lot of fun! Next time I’m bringing a life perserver and an inflatable raft and a beachball!

PETA are a bunch of fanatical terrorists

Taken from:

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&ncid=1756&e=3&u=/050606/480/risr10106061854

Summary:

PETA wants you to think that eating ANY MEAT makes you a CANNIBAL. Gee, last time I checked I wasnt eating OTHER PEOPLE FOR DINNER. I mean, I could be wrong here. Oh yeah, PETA is also totally against you having animals as pets. Or using animals for medical research.

“PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment.”

Bruce Friedrich, a PETA executive. “If we really believe animals have the same right to be free from pain and suffering at our hands, then of course we’re going to be blowing things up and smashing windows. I think it would be great if all of the fast-food outlets, slaughterhouses, these laboratories, and the banks that fund them, exploded tomorrow.”

Of course the fact that one of PETAs own VPs has to get insulin shots from animal made insulin isnt hypocritical AT ALL.

PETA Senior Vice President MaryBeth Sweetland on her use of insulin, which was tested on animals:

“I’m an insulin-dependent diabetic. Twice a day I take synthetically manufactured insulin that still contains some animal products — and I have no qualms about it … I’m not going to take the chance of killing myself by not taking insulin. I don’t see myself as a hypocrite. I need my life to fight for the rights of animals.”
–Glamour, January 1990

» Click here to see the money trail between PETA and its phony “physicians committee” front group.
» Click here to learn about PETA’s hypocritical practice of killing thousands of animals.

A few other things about PETA you didnt know:

1) PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk has described her group’s overall goal as “total animal liberation.” This means no meat, no milk, no zoos, no circuses, no wool, no leather, no hunting, no fishing, and no pets (not even seeing-eye dogs). PETA is also against all medical research that requires the use of animals.

2) Despite its constant moralizing about the “unethical” treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, PETA has killed over 10,000 dogs and cats at its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. During 2003, PETA put to death over 85 percent of the animals it collected from members of the public.

3) PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified “domestic terrorist” group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing recommendation, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. And PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich told an animal rights convention in 2001 that “blowing stuff up and smashing windows” is “a great way to bring about animal liberation.”

4) PETA activists regularly target children as young as six years old with anti-meat and anti-milk propaganda, often waiting outside their schools to intercept them as they walk to and from class-without notifying parents. One piece of kid-targeted PETA literature tells small children: “Your Mommy Kills Animals!” PETA brags that its messages reach over 2 million children every year, including thousands reached by e-mail without the permission of their parents. One PETA vice president told the Fox News Channel’s audience: “Our campaigns are always geared towards children, and they always will be.”

5) PETA has used a related organization, the PETA Foundation, to fund the misnamed Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a deceptive animal rights group that promotes itself as an unbiased source of medical and nutritional information. PCRM’s president also serves as president of the PETA Foundation.

6) PETA runs campaigns seemingly calculated to offend religious believers. One entire PETA website is devoted to the claim-despite ample evidence to the contrary-that Jesus Christ was a vegetarian. PETA holds protests at houses of worship, even suing one church that tried to protect its members from Sunday-morning harassment. Its billboards taunt Christians with the message that hogs “died for their sins.” PETA insists, contrary to centuries of rabbinical teaching, that the Jewish ritual of kosher slaughter shouldn’t be allowed. And its infamous “Holocaust on Your Plate” campaign crassly compares the Jewish victims of Nazi genocide with farm animals.

7) PETA has repeatedly attacked research foundations like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the American Cancer Society, because they support animal-based research that might uncover cures for birth defects and life-threatening diseases. PETA president Ingrid Newkirk has said that “even if animal research resulted in a cure for AIDS, we would be against it.”

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

Thank you for your interest in the HID Technical Support position. The
position has been filled. I was looking for someone with access control or
technical support experience.

Sincerely,

John Otters
HID Technical Support Manager

Okay, “access control” expereince I don’t have (I’m assuming he means physical access control systems here, like induction keycard systems)

But no “technical support expereince”? What kind of crack is he smoking to read my resume and think I have no troubleshooting critical skills? Anyways thanks for the lead Jody but apparently I dont know how to troubleshoot my way out of a paper bag or know how to configure a building keycard system.

Update: I decided to reply back to this email because I just simply couldn’t believe this guy had read my resume and think I had no troubleshooting skills.

“Mr. Otters,

I appreciate you’re getting back to me with regards to the position being filled, its not a courtesy many managers engage in these days I have found. I must express some curiosity however at the statement you think I did not have any technical support experience? If I am interpreting what you said wrong then by all means I apologize but to get the skills I have with regards to systems administration, network engineering, as well as computer forensics troubleshooting skills are critical skills needed to do those particular jobs. I had worked at Earthlink Networks back in 1997 for half a year doing phone support for both Windows and Mac systems as well but havent included it in my resume for the past few years because it was a long time ago and my current skillset has already superseded the requirements of that position. However, with regards to access control I guess I was not what you were looking for since I’ve never had direct contact with HID’s products. In any event I hope your new candidate works out well for you.

It will be interesting to see if I get a response back, but I just can’t believe this.

The Dan Report

Got to tool all around the Port of Los Angeles this morning, some associates of mine got the contract a few months back to do the Port’s new security system and hooo-boy is it a doozy of a project. Got called in to check out some network equipment and figure out what in the sam-hell the equiment was doing and how. Got some billable hours out of that so that is good.

No new word on interviews. Heck, no new interviews either! This sucks, I need to now really find a decent part time position doing something I can do for decent pay so I can do school fulltime. I have some leads to check into but I am worried somewhat about what is available out there.

In other news, Elka and Mike are getting married. Huzzah for them, I hope it works out. *sigh* Now if I could just find me someone special that would be really keen.

Talked to Chris Bunch today, turns out he is still looking for a job also. Sounds like he might actually be trying to reclaim his balls from his wife. I hope that works out, I hate seeing him not happy.

Oh, and apparently CJ moved to Escondido with Captain ZOT! aka Cory since his poker bankroll finally got busted more or less.

Mike and Deanna get married tomorrow.

Geeze, too many weddings going on. What the is deal?
